A RESOLurIOO OPPOSING 'lHE SALE OF WINE BY GRCX:EtY SIDRES
IN 'lHE CI'lY OF SIlJRE\.\aD
WHEREAS, the Minnesota State Legislature created municipal liquor
stores in 1934 primarily to control the sale of liquor; and
WHEREAS, the City of Shorewood entered into the municipal liquor
business with the intention of controlling the sale and dispensation of
liquor; and
WHEREAS, not only have municipal liquor stores provided control
over the sale of liquor, but also provided reduced taxes and a source of
funding for other City projects, i.e., sidewalks, recreational buildings,
etc.; and
WHEREAS, in most municipal liquor stores minors are forbidden to
be on the premises without their parent or guardian; and
WHEl\Rl\S, grocery stores, whether small or large, hire 16, 17 and
18 year olds both in the stock area and at the cash registers; and

WHEREAS, many grocery stores, whether small or large, are known
to sell 3/2 beer and cigarettes to minors; and
"'~, the proliferation of selling wine and strong beers in
nunerous addi tional markets, making these products more accessible to the
public because of their increased availability, increases alcoholism, alcohol
abuse, and alcohol-related driving problems.
N:lV, 'lHEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Ci ty Counci I of the Ci ty of
Shorewood that the City is absolutely against the sale of wine in grocery
stores in any fonn.
FURlHER, BE IT RESOLVED, that a copy of this resolution should be
sent to the legislators representing the City of Shorewood and Governor
Perpich.
