6. "ART for the PARKS" SHOW
Jackie Dallman reported that 57 of the 180 spaces have been filled, which is about 25 percent behind
this time last year. There needed to be more of a marketing effort, and July 1 was approaching as the
go/no-go date for placement of various forms of advertising media. She noted there was some question
about the availability of the high school for the fair, as she had tried to make confirmations with the
community ed director, and was informed that he had retired. Craig Dawson would check with
Superintendent Dennis Peterson to confirm that commitments already made would continue to be
honored.
7. FREEMAN PARK PLAZA PROJECT
Park Commission Acting Chair Sue Davis arrived at 5:47 p.m. during discussion of this item.
There was general discussion about the joint work session with the City Council on June 14. There was
some confusion about what was necessary in terms of plans sufficiently detailed for Park Commission
review, and when recommendations would be made regarding recognition of donors.
Dawson said that these matters could be handled simultaneously. The preparation of the final
plan/design and the donor recognition policy would be scheduled for the July 13 Park Commission
meeting, with Council action scheduled for July 26. The Foundation could be obtaining quotes to do the
work at any time, but would not need to commit to any of them until July 27 at the earliest.
Davis believed that a sufficient plan would show the project in plan (overhead) view, with notes about
the type of surface proposed, planting areas identified, and possible locations for and types of trees; a
cross-section of the concrete pad and base; and types of furniture. There would also need to be a site
plan in terms of its location between Eddy Station and the playground area.
Ken Dallman would contact Larry Brown regarding the concrete pad specification that the City would
accept. Paula Callies and Gordy Lindstrom would also meet with Larry Brown at Freeman Park to
identify exactly where the picnic plaza should be placed.
Directors agreed that the fence shown in the artist's rendering should not be installed.
8. OTHER BUSINESS
a) Nomination to Board of Directors
Dawson related that at the last Council meeting, the Council asked the Foundation to consider an
amendment to its by-laws such that Council would not need to appoint directors. This matter would
be placed on the agenda for the Foundation's next meeting.
b) Apple Day Booth
Directors decided to submit an application for a booth at Apple Day in Excelsior, Sept. 11.
