Not only for the potential "walk to school" plans for next year's school year, but for bikes, safe walking, and general community enjoyment. Smithtown Road, Cathcart Drive and Strawberry Lane are all extremely unsafe roads for walking or biking. There is no safe way to get to the trail or to Cathcart Park, from any direction, without fear of injury. One of Shorewood's best selling points is that "un-city" feel-until you try to walk on Smithtown Road. Take a drive through Eden Prairie-they've managed to have sidewalks just about everywhere, and it makes for a very family-friendly community. Ifthey can do it, so can we. We love to get outdoors and take Hunter for walks in his stroller but we find it is very dangerous. I live in the Marsh pointe development which has no sidewalks. Fortunately, our neighborhood is very child friendly and everyone is very careful when driving in our development. The problem lies in taking longer walks than up and down our block. We have two options to get out of our neighborhood: Carthcart Road and Smithtown Road. Neither have shoulders for walking and both are used as speedways by motorists. Why tear up the road and only partially fix the problem? Why not add a 4 foot walk path or shoulder to the road? Let's not continue to make financially poor decisions with our tax dollars. This road is very important and I can appreciate those who wish to retain its original design but lets not sacrifice safety for the sake of historical value. I ask you which is more important? Preserving the original design of the road or preventing children from being killed or injured along this road? Our children's safety must come first!! Those who wish to preserve this road probably don't have young children. Unfortunately, I think you will find there are more of us who do have young children living along or adjacent to this road. Over the years, I have been amazed at the number of MN funded roadway projects that have simply put a Band-Aid on a bad system. Let's be forward thinking and pull ourselves out of living in the past! I know I am not alone on this concept and I do believe you will make the right decision once you really give this some thought. We were willing to drive a longer distance from work, friends, family, & entertainment to get the feel of something like Smithtown road. I have found ways to run off of Smithtown along wonderful side streets, but when I do run along Smithtown I feel like wearing a shirt they says "THE SPEED LIMIT IS 30", but I am sure it would not help. If we "fix", "make better" Smithtown we will see a huge increase in speed!!! I think right now people drive slower because it is a little bumpy and not nice and smooth.
