Dawson, City Administrator October 19, 2006 Severance Benefit Cap regarding Three Employees (Work Session Item) At the October 9,2006, work session, Council directed me to meet with the three employees who have in excess of 800 hours in the balance of their sick leave. We met this week. All of the employees have accrued sick leave due to good health; having high balances available for long-term illness or injury, or for the severance benefit, were not primary motivators behind their balances. All three employees were agreeable to reducing their balances to 800 hours at the end of this year, rather than being able to maintain their high balances. Bringing their balances to 800 hours would be accomplished by compensating them for their balances in excess of that amount. They agreed that payment for 100% of those hours was unrealistic, and not fair to the City. Of the other two scenarios, a 33% conversion (based on the current policy) or a 50% conversion (based on the proposed program), they preferred the 50% conversion. The 50% conversion will cost approximately $36,000. At 33%, the conversion will cost approximately $24,000. The City has adequate reserves to make these one-time payments associated with the adoption of a new sick leave/severance program. 4'. t.J PRINTED ON RECYCLED PAPER
