Resident's dream threatened by city.government
By Tom Dahlberg
Guest Columnist
If there's anything I've
learned in the last several
months of getting together
with my neighbors to fight a
trail that was once planned for
Smith town Road and may be
planned yet again, it's that I
and my neighbors are very
much alike.
But this otherwise pleasant
revelation never should have
been induced the way it was by
our city government through the
terror it imposed upon us this
spring.
Yes - "terror." Using that
word is part of coming clean,
part of being completely honest.
The word "terrified" accurately
describes the feeling both I and
my wife experienced when the
city threatened to take what we
thought was ours.
Our "American Dream" is
what we found, or thought we
had found, in Shorewood - the
right home on the perfect lot. A
lot that really made our hearts
beat faster the first time we saw
it. We went through a tremen-.
dous elTort to buy it.
Years later, a9 I get up to
mow it. smell it and take it all
in, my heart still beats a little
faster.
If our present city govern-
ment had succeeded in build-
ing the trail, they would have
destroyed our dream and we'd
be moving away from Shore-
wood.
In the name of their own un-
wanted vision, they would have
stripped away the privacy my
wife adores, on the porch she
adores, for a trail opposed by the
vast majority of people living on
my street.
And that - that was terror.
It was terrifying and will re-
main terrifying as long as the
Planning Commission cannot
accept the defeat of its totally in-
sensitive intrusion which I and
my neighbors have temporarily
. achieved.
This experience has taught
my wife and I that the central-
ized planning of city govern-
ment, done by a handful of peo-
ple for our neighborhood nnd our
prop~rty, and your neighbor- ,
hood and your property, is total-
ly inappropriate.
There's something deeply,
deeply wrong here. There's a
need here to entirely rethink
city government's role in our
lives. There's a need to put a
leash on any system, any level of
government, that can terrorize a
simple dream like ours.
This Bummer I should be
coming home from work and
spending the glorious evenings I
used to, tucking my 8-year-old
under iny arm on the old sofa we
keep on that old porch, and
thinking about nothing except
the cardinal nesting in the ar-
borvitae in front of me and what
a vision the low light is as it.

elder and pine trees that would

not be there if the Planning
Commission and .City Council
had its way.
Instead, I and my neighbors
now have to deal daily with the
anxiety that comes from losing
our innocence about city govern-
ment. City government should
be protecting us.
Instead, we feel under attack.
If we're not vigilant, they will
prove just how fragile and inse-
cure our little dreams are.
This summer, I won't be ex-
periencing the peace my little
dream gave me last year.
